If Apple does it correctly this could change the way people interact with computers for generations to come. Keyboards and mice are just tools and we only use them because they are the best we have engineered thus far. At some point we are going to find a more elegant solution.

Just a heads up for any of the Home Automation Junkies out there. Crestron has already released the "XPanel" for Mac. So now you will be able to have all of the functions of a Crestron touch panel with the nice look you know apple will give us with the tablet. I already have a client willing to buy a tablet for every room so he can email, surf, and control his house all on one device.

That's a great question. I meant to make note of it in the post. In my experience it is pretty light on the processor considering the graphics involved. When I used it with the Activity monitor open I never saw the application go much over 10% of processor capacity. I used it on my machine with Photoshop, iTunes, Safari and several other applications open and I never saw any noticeable lag or even heard the fan spin up.

My sister and I were rarities in our youth -- the elusive girl gamers, and as adults, we're both still completely wired in to video games thanks -FIRST- to the Atari 2600 our parents FINALLY let us play and the consequent NES we forced them to buy for us. My love for video games started as we sat in our living room, way too close to our enormous floor console tv, with the curtains behind us clothespinned to minimize the sun's glare on Frogger, Pitfall, Combat, Circus Atari, and Kaboom -- the family favorites.

Though it takes a long story to get to the connection, my introduction to the Final Fantasy series in Christmas of '87 is responsible for my marriage. So, hear, hear, Joe -- and thanks, NES!

At first, I thought Joe had written this, and I commented as such on his FB notes, so I am copying my comment and leaving it for its rightful owner!

Nicely done.

I was no huge fan of the series, but I watched my fill enough to feel leery that the canon might be treated badly when this movie came out (just as I worry about all the established canons that movie-makers pillage and destroy. See entry: Joe's childhood, Michael Bay sets out to ruin).

I was impressed with it in the end, but there were several plot points that were little bit too quick and a little bit too convenient to be a totally believable back-story. I love Lost, but the same 'hey look! mystery/shiny' technique was used to distract anyone who might question these plot points from further inquiry. You mention all the ones that bothered me and more I hadn't considered.... See More

All in all, I'd say it was fairly well done and serves the added purpose of reviving interest in old school Trek, so I can't complain. Though I'm not a die-hard fan, it might make die-hard fans happy to see a new breed in love with their old favorites.
